This painting is a painted version of a photograph by David Long, a New England based photographer whose work can be explored at davelongphoto.com. While sifting through reference photos of the lighthouse, his shot stopped me immediately because of the striking composition, balance, and sense of mystery. It was so much fun trying to emulate everything his photo achieved through paint. I was working on paper primed in light pink with a hot pink underpainting, and I saw the perfect opportunity to build up layers of acrylic and gouache over that vibrant base to capture those vivid pink and orange glows set against the deep blue night sky.
