This original mixed media painting is a sixteen year collaboration with my younger self. It began in 2010 as a somber study of dried flowers that for a long time felt like a dark omen. At 40, I decided it was time to rewrite the story and give this exact canvas a new life.
The real magic of this original piece lives in its tactile layers. I used National Geographic pages featuring Tuareg women celebrating a birth to build the textured background. After instinctively shifting the entire palette to a transparent indigo, I realized something incredible.
The original caption from the photos, which I only saw after pasting them down, mentioned that the women’s hands were stained by the indigo dye of their celebratory clothes. I had chosen the color of celebration before I even knew the history of the images. I like to think these women would approve of the transformation.
Owning the original means owning the actual physical history of the artwork. You can see the subtle ridges of the vintage magazine pages beneath the paint and the exact, instinctive brushstrokes that transformed the floral arrangement.

This piece is the second in a special three part series directly inspired by the stunning botanical photography of Claire Takacs. Drawing deeply from the lush, cultivated energy found in her book Dreamscapes, this painting captures the vibrant movement and layered beauty of a terraced garden. Using a vivid blend of acrylic and alcohol marker, I wanted to translate that feeling of wandering through an immersive, overgrown space into a tangible piece of art.
